10 Restaurants to Check Out During New Brunswick Restaurant Week
July 14, 2018 to July 28, 2018 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
New Brunswick Restaurant Week kicked off on July 14th. Being there for four years through college gave me plenty of time to scope out the NB food scene. Some of my favorite restaurants have amazing deals going on for the next two weeks so consider this your inside scoop. My favorite part about New Brunswick eats is that there’s something for everyone. From date night to girls night or even a solo lunch, anybody with any diet will find something to eat and enjoy it. For the full list of participants, see the official site here
Saying I love this place would be an understatement. As a sophomore, I came here with my new roommate (HI NIKITA) as a little roomie first date and had some of the best food of my life. Since then, it’s become a go-to for special occasions. You can’t go wrong with the filet mignon which comes in either a 8 oz or a 12 oz. For more of a causal meal (read:cheaper), the Black Angus burger won’t disappoint. You could even go for the sirloin which comes with a delicious garlic dipping sauce. The sides are the exciting part of the meal here; get these family style. My absolute favorites are the lobster risotto and the steak cut fries, my weakness. Definitely get dessert while you’re here and make sure it’s the bananas foster. You’ll eat it and find yourself considering outrageous trips back to get a second taste.
The Deal: Date Night Special $99.00 per couple
A little hidden, Delta's stands on slow paced Dennis street, a block away from busy George Street. A soul food favorite with all the classics done well. Delta’s serves up comfort food in an elegant way and adds cozy decor and live jazz (sometimes) to elevate the mood. This was the only place I had the time to visit during I Don't Do Clubs' Black Owned Restaurant Month last year. You can read my full review here.
The Deal: 3 Course Dinner Menu for $36.00
As someone who used to find hot dogs repulsive, this place changed the game. My roommates put me on when we lived a couple blocks away and Destination Dogs became a staple for us. The menu includes sausages and hot dogs from all over the world and uses airport codes to identify them. I love how creative they were with that menu. For those who don’t eat meat, they offer a veggie dog which you sub on any menu items. My favorite meal there just happened to be a one day special; it was a layered dog with refried beans, guacamole, sour cream and basically, the works. I’ve asked for it every time I’ve been back and had no luck. Some other go-to items are the buffalo wings, The Oscar (LAX), and Chivas Royale (GDL). The fries come as a big portion so one order for every two people is my rule of thumb.
Vegetarian + Vegan Friendly
A casual spot with a great bakery and a cozy patio with outdoor seating. The mix and match sandwiches are my favorite part of the menu, after the salted caramel brownie dessert. I usually opt some variation of a chicken sandwich, with the crispy buffalo coming in first place. They have a wide variety on the menu with a lot of healthy options in the ‘Power Corner’ section.
The Deal: 2 for $20 Menu (11:30am to 8:00pm)
Dashen Ethiopian Cuisine
Be prepared to eat with your hands. Ethiopian cuisine consists of a sour sponge-like bread (Injera) that’s topped with rounds of meat or vegetable stews. I’m not a fan of injera, I find it way too sour. The stews, however, are delicious so I rather pile those on and skip the bread. Go for the Gomen, a combination of spices and collard greens and the Kik alicha, a vibrant yellow stew of split peas.

For the Drinks
George Street Ale House
Writing this right now, it just hit me that I've been calling this place Garden State Ale House forever. Either the name changed or I've been tripping for 5 years. Right in downtown New Brunswick, this is your typical gastropub- all the classics like wings, burgers and nachos with an impressive selection of craft beer.
The Deal: Complimentary Dessert with $40+ Purchase
Harvest Moon Brewery
A local brewery that's been making their own beer for the past 21 years. The food menu here is extensive and features a good mix of American classics like pretzel braids and wings but also serves a good take on more adventurous items like their lamb meatball (Zorba the Meatball) and a poke bowl (Maui Tuna Poke).
The deal: 3 Course Dinner $25
Stuff Yer Face
FISHBOWLS. If you're not from the area, take the trip to New Brunswick just to experience this Rutgers staple. It looks like a hangover in a 60 oz. glass but Stuff hasn't done me wrong. The drinks are not part of the Restaurant Week deal but go get one anyway. They're also known for their Stromboli- carbs filled with meat, cheese and veggies. What else do you need?
The deal: 20% off food purchase $20+
Save these for people you really like. Steakhouse 85 (above) applies here too.
Located on the corner of Albany Street and Neilson Street, Due Mari serves up delicious pan-Italian cuisine. My favorite lunch item, the Caprese Panino, isn't on the Restaurant Week menu but I trust the sandwiches on there will be just as good. The specials lunch menu has options like watermelon feta salad and grilled peaches as appetizer options and spinach pasta, shrimp skewers, or a BLT as an entree. The dinner menu allows you to choose from steak, salmon, or spinach pasta as your main course with 3 desserts to choose from.
The Deal: 2 Course $21 Lunch | 3 Course $48 Dinner
The Frog and The Peach
Run by CIA (Culinary Institute of America) Graduate, Chef Bruce Lefebvre, since 2012, The Frog and The Peach is one of New Brunswick's best gems. The extensive wine list combined with a menu that explores various regions while staying true to the Garden State are only part of what makes coming here an experience. For the next two weeks, they're offering a 2 course lunch for $19 and 3 course dinner for $39. A Jersey corn bisque appears on the appetizer menu for both courses as well as crab croquetas. If you're stopping in for dinner, you have the choice of scallops in a brown butter sauce, balsamic marinated hanger steak or bolted wheat radiatori aka radiator shaped pasta.
